Planning your senior portraits in NH? There’s no better place to capture this special milestone than the beach. The natural beauty of New Hampshire’s coastline, with its soft sand and stunning sunrise, provides the perfect backdrop for your senior photos. To ensure your senior portraits NH turn out amazing, here are ten essential tips for a flawless beach photo session.

Timing is crucial for capturing stunning senior portraits NH on the beach. The golden hour—the hour after sunrise or before sunset—is the best time for your shoot. This soft, warm light enhances your skin tone, minimizes shadows, and gives your photos a natural, radiant glow.
New England has some beautiful beaches, each with its own unique vibe. Whether you prefer the dramatic cliffs of Rye Beach or the soft sands of York Beach, select a location that resonates with your personality. This will ensure your senior portraits NH truly reflect who you are.

Your outfit choice can make or break your senior portraits NH. Opt for clothing that complements the beach setting—think soft, flowing fabrics in light or pastel colors. Avoid busy patterns that could clash with the natural scenery. The goal is to let the beauty of the beach enhance, not overwhelm, your look.

Tips for Choosing Clothing That Will Help Create Movement
As your photographer, I’ll keep an eye on the weather forecast and tide schedule leading up to your session. An overcast day can offer diffused light perfect for senior portraits NH, while low tide provides more beach space for creative shots. Being prepared ensures you can make the most of your photo session, no matter the conditions.
If possible, bring a second or third outfit for a quick change during the session. This gives you variety in your photos, allowing you to showcase different sides of your personality. Make sure the second outfit is easy to change into and complements the beach setting just as well.

Incorporate props that showcase your personality or interests. Whether it’s a surfboard, a beach ball, or even a favorite book, these elements can add a fun, personal touch to your photos. Just make sure they’re easy to carry and don’t distract from the main focus—you!
The key to great photos is to feel relaxed and natural. I will guide you through various natural poses—sitting on the sand, walking along the shoreline, or gazing out at the ocean. Don’t be afraid to move around and interact with your surroundings. The more at ease you are, the more genuine your photos will look.
Having a friend or family member with you can help ease any nerves and make the session more enjoyable. They can also assist with things like holding props, helping you relax, or even making you laugh for those genuine smiles.

Beach shoots can get warm, so it’s important to stay hydrated. Bring along water and maybe a small towel to dab away any sweat. Also, consider packing a touch-up kit with essentials like a brush, lip balm, and sunscreen to keep you looking fresh throughout the shoot.
Finally, trust me! I know how to work with lighting, angles, and your unique features to create stunning images. Don’t be afraid to ask for guidance or share your ideas—I’m here to help you look and feel your best.
A senior beach photo shoot is more than just a photography session—it’s an experience that captures who you are at this pivotal moment in your life. By following these tips, you’ll be well-prepared to make the most of your shoot and walk away with beautiful, timeless photos that you’ll cherish forever.
So, grab your favorite outfit, pick your perfect beach spot, and get ready to shine in front of the camera!

As a professional photographer, I understand the importance of timing in outdoor photography. The right time of day can transform your photos from ordinary to extraordinary. Whether you’re planning a family photoshoot, an engagement session, or senior portraits, choosing the perfect timing is crucial. So, what time of day is best for outdoor photos in New Hampshire? In this blog post, I’ll share the best times of day for different types of outdoor sessions and provide insights to help you make the most of your photoshoot.

Sunset is one of the most popular times for outdoor photography, and for good reason. The hour before the sun dips below the horizon, known as the golden hour, gives everything in a warm, soft light that’s incredibly flattering for family photos, engagement sessions, and senior portraits.
Ideal Starting Time: We typically start about an hour before sunset. This timing allows us to capture the beautiful changing light and ensure a variety of stunning shots.

Sunrise offers a magical light that’s often softer and cooler compared to sunset. Plus, you usually have the added bonus of fewer people around, making for more peaceful and intimate photos
Ideal Starting Time: We usually start about 20-30 minutes before sunrise. This allows us to capture the changing light from pre-dawn to the actual sunrise.

Overcast days can actually be a blessing for outdoor photography. The clouds act as a giant diffuser, creating even, soft light that’s perfect for photos.
Ideal Time of Day: We can shoot at any time during an overcast day, but mid-morning to late afternoon is often best to avoid the flat light of midday.
One disadvantage of doing a photo shoot on an overcast day is that the dull, gray skies can make colors in the photos appear muted and less vibrant. The lack of direct sunlight often results in lower contrast and saturation, giving the photos a flat and lifeless look. This can be especially challenging if you’re aiming for bright, vivid images. Choosing outfits with bold colors can really liven up your photos on an overcast day. Check out my blog post on transforming New Hampshire’s cloudy day photo sessions into stunning portraits for more tips and tricks.

Cloudy days, unlike fully overcast days, can provide dramatic lighting and interesting contrasts. The changing light and patterns can add a dynamic element to your photos.
Ideal Time of Day: Late afternoon to early evening is often best as the clouds can create striking effects with the setting sun.

Beaches on the East Coast are ideal for sunrise photos because the sun rises directly over the ocean, offering a breathtaking backdrop and a warm, golden glow that enhances your images. If you’re wondering what time of day is best for outdoor photos at the beach, then sunrise is what you want. Sunrise provides that soft, flattering illumination that makes photos look magical and beautiful.
In contrast, sunset sessions on the East Coast may not offer the same visual impact. Since the sun sets over the land rather than the ocean, it can be challenging to capture both a stunning backdrop and flattering light The light at sunset might not reflect as beautifully off the water, which can result in less dramatic lighting and a less vibrant background. This difference in timing and lighting can significantly affect the overall look of your beach photos.
Ideal Times:
Choosing the right time of day for your outdoor photoshoot can greatly impact the final results. Whether you’re aiming for the warm glow of the golden hour, the soft light of an overcast day, or the dramatic effects of a cloudy sky, timing is crucial. What time of day is best for outdoor photos? You must consider these factors when planing your family photoshoot, engagement session, or senior portraits.

If it fits your budget, I highly recommend that all my senior clients invest in professional hair and makeup. This investment will significantly enhance the quality of your photos and overall senior portrait experience. You’re already putting effort into what to wear for senior photos, so why not ensure they’re the best they can be!
Professional hair and makeup artists are trained to do hair and makeup that photographs well. While your makeup may look amazing in person, it could look completely different on-camera, and these professionals are trained to know the difference! They will conceal spots you don’t like, contour so your face looks the best in every light, use colors that compliment your skin tone, make your eyes pop, manicure your eyebrows to perfection, and more!
Your senior session can be full of decisions, including what you’re going to wear, who you’re going to bring, and more. Trying to do your own hair and makeup if you don’t know what you’re doing can make it harder. Hiring a professional hair and makeup artist takes all the stress away and lets you simply enjoy your big day!
I don’t ever want my seniors to feel like their portrait session is simply taking photos, I want it to be a fun EXPERIENCE you can remember every time you look at your images. So, if you arrive at your senior session after an hour of pampering, the whole day has already started out on a fantastic note! After all, you’re only a high school senior once!
Not everyone I work with is used to getting their photo taken, and I totally get how intimidating it can be! Getting your hair and makeup done will give you that extra boost of confidence you deserve to shine in your senior photos!
Cameras are designed to capture every detail, so make sure your lips are not chapped and flaky! Without lipstick or gloss, your lips could easily blend into the surrounding skin, which nobody wants. If you aren’t a lipstick kind of girl, put on some tinted chapstick so your lips are still smooth, glossy, and pink!
Using foundation or concealer can make a world of difference in your photos! It can make your skin appear flawless, but only as long as it’s applied evenly and blended down your neck. Try using a makeup sponge or foundation brush to blend your foundation and concealer all over your skin!
False eyelashes are a super fun way to add a little extra glam to your photos! While they may feel a bit odd if you don’t wear them often, they make your eyes POP in your images and look totally natural!
Your hands will be incorporated into some of the poses, so pampered nails are a must. Neutral or pastel colors photograph best without drawing too much attention away from your face! If you don’t want to get your nails done at a salon, consider getting press on nails at Walmart or Target! They’re inexpensive and wicked easy to apply.
If you wear foundation, make sure that it’s not covering your brows! Sometimes concealer or foundation can accidentally get onto your eyebrows, making them appear faded. Giving your brows a good comb-through with some tinted brow gel is a great idea. Your brows help frame your face, so bold brows are important!

Welcome to your ultimate guide for what to wear for senior photos! Whether you’re looking to capture your unique style or this special chapter of your life, this guide is packed with helpful tips to ensure you look amazing for your session.
Stuck on what to wear? I’m here to help! Here are some guidelines:

When deciding what to wear for senior photos, there are some items you should avoid:

Tight-fitting clothes might seem flattering, but they can limit posing options. Opt for outfits that allow movement, like fit & flair or maxi dresses. If it’s too tight to sit in comfortably, it’s not the right choice when deciding what to wear for senior photos.
Layers add dimension and movement. Cardigans, scarves, and denim jackets are perfect. They give you more posing options and can be removed for variety. Extra points if your layer has pockets!
Busy patterns can be distracting and clash with backgrounds. Stick to solid colors, two-toned patterns, or small prints. Polka dots, vertical stripes, and small floral patterns are great!
Shirts with lace, crochet, ties, buttons, or ruffles add interest without being distracting. Off-the-shoulder tops can be very flattering for photos.
Necklaces, belts, headbands, hair scarves, bracelets, hats, and other unique accessories can add a lot of interest! Bring different accessories for each outfit and switch them halfway through for maximum variety.
Have a variety of looks: casual, dressy, preppy, edgy, school-related, or sports-related. Many seniors bring their cheer uniform, dance leotard, or sports jersey. Aim for at least 3 different categories to create a wide range of images!

Your wardrobe should reflect both the season and your personality. Here’s a guide for each season when considering what to wear for senior photos:
Whatever season you love, it’s the perfect season for YOU! Your favorite clothes will help determine the best time for your senior photos
Selfie Leslie: For cute mini dresses
Vici: For trendy staple pieces
Nuuly: For rentable designer pieces
Princess Polly: For cute trendy pieces
Forever 21: Inexpensive statement pieces
Pretty Little Things: For trendy pieces from a small business
Em and Elle – For cute staples from a small business
Dani Rae & Company: For cute staple pieces
Vestique: For trendy statement pieces
Free People: For trendy pieces
Urban Outfitters: For trendy statement pieces
H&M: Inexpensive statement pieces
Shein: Inexpensive statement pieces

Some seniors find it fitting to go shoeless for one of their outfits! Whether it’s in a long dress or jean capris, the barefoot look can be super cute.
Some outfits call for flowing locks, while others call for a high pony or a headband! Consider doing a hair change with each outfit for maximum variety.
If you choose to wear a tank top with thin straps or a shirt with a unique neckline, consider going strapless for your bra or using pasties. Bra straps can detract from close-up headshots and can be difficult to manage.
Since your hands will be incorporated into many of the poses, it’s best to leave the Apple Watch at home or in the car. They can distract from your face in your photos and date your images when you look back at them years from now. Don’t worry, I’ll edit out your tan lines!
You only get your senior photos done once, so now is your time to go all out! Wear that extra cute top or pretty flowy dress, bring a basket full of flowers as a prop, or get a blowout. Whatever it is, make an occasion out of it to celebrate this time in your life.
Remember, when deciding what to wear for senior photos, these tips will help ensure your session is fun, stylish, and uniquely you!

Shoes can be the perfect accessory to make any outfit pop! The right pair can give you confidence, set the mood of your outfit, and even elongate your legs. Here’s a quick guide to choosing the perfect shoes for your senior session:
Remember, when deciding what to wear for senior photos, your shoes can be the perfect finishing touch!
When it comes to accessories, there are plenty of options to complete your look: belts, scarves, jewelry, sunglasses, hats, hair accessories, and shoes. Here are a few tips to help you choose the perfect finishing touches:
If your outfit already makes a statement, keep accessories minimal to avoid overwhelming the look.
For outfits with prints or patterns, choose solid accessories that complement the design.

Match accessories to the overall style of your outfit. Stick to traditional accessories for classic looks and trendy accessories for modern outfits.
Remember, accessories should enhance your outfit, not overpower it. Choose pieces that add to your look and highlight your personal style!
